Cyber-Duck grace the Houses of Parliament

This week Cyber-Duck were present at the Houses of Parliament as Matt, Danny and Arpit attended  the New Concept 2012 reception.  On top of that the Cyber-Duck design crew hit the Business Design Centre in Islington as we presented one lucky budding designer with the coveted Associates Prize at this year’s New Designers Awards 2012.

After viewing all of the excellent work on show and much deliberation between the team Cyber-Duck were proud to present Mina Nishimura with the sought after Associates Prize 2012 for her work on a Mobile Web App called Shopstar. The aim of the app was to improve the shopping experience at supermarkets using mobile technology and Mina achieved this by creating a web app which included features such as an item locator, item comparison and a shopping list generator, which all aim to increase the efficiency of shopping while the basket total calculator, loyalty card and voucher implementation opens up money saving opportunities.

The Cyber-Duck judging team awarded Shopstar the prize for its clever concept, excellent user experience (UX), visual design and attention to detail.

As well as presenting the associates prize to Mina, Cyber-Duck were exhibiting at the New Designers event, and were even hosting a duck hunt competition where visitors and exhibitors had to search for one of the 100 rubber ducks we had planted around the Business Design Centre and bring it back to the Cyber-Duck stand. The majority of the ducks were collected and now one lucky winner will be the recipient of £20 Amazon gift voucher courtesy of Cyber-Duck. Also this week, Danny, Matt and Arpit were present at the Houses of Parliament on Thursday night to attend the New Concept 2012 reception. The event was a chance for SMEs in Hertfordshire to congregate together for an evening of drinks and networking. The evening also gave businesses the chance to hear from Mark Prisk MP for Hertford and Stortford on plans for the area and the increasing success for businesses and employment rates in the Herfordshire area.

Cyber-Duck Development Director, Sylvain Reiter attended the Mobile Payments Panel on Monday in London. During the event the panel discussed that the current experimental solutions of micropayments are working (at Starbucks or PizzaExpress for example) but are not engaging enough to attract the mass market.

The panel also discussed social behaviour challenges, as well as the lack of attractive commercial models for merchant/retailers. What are we as consumer expecting from the mobile payment? Surely it is not JUST about turning our phone into a credit card! We need to think big about revolutionary products or services that the upcoming technology could provide. Sylvain Reiter came back with a valuable insight on the current market:

“Mobile payments are still at a very early stage and retailers are not ready to invest into what could be the “next big thing” without better visibility of where it is all going. Because of this uncertainty, I think it makes much more sense for retailers to invest in responsive web design and improve their online eCommerce presence. By converting more of the 15% of traffic coming from mobile devices on their eCommerce site, there is much more money to be made than investing in an in-store mobile payment point of sales.”

We’re also pleased to announce that The Knowledge Online has been nominated for a PPA (Professional Publishers Association) Digital Publishing Award. Cyber-Duck have worked with Wilmington Publishing Plc since the beginning of 2011 on the website, which was revamped and launched in Autumn 2011. The website has been shortlisted in the category of directory of the year and both members of Wilmington Plc and Cyber-Duck will be present at the awards ceremony as we look to add another award to our trophy cabinet.

That’s it for this week, stay tuned for more updates on the Duckies next week.
