Technology World Rocked by the Death of Steve Jobs

Back

Unfortunately today's weekly begins on a sad note as we pay tribute to Apple “visionary” Steve Jobs, who passed away on Wednesday.

The Apple founder had been battling pancreatic cancer since he was diagnosed back in 2004. Tributes have been made by people from around the world, including Presidents, Prime Ministers and competitors. Steve Jobs was the driving force behind Apple, with his creative vision leading to products like the Macintosh, iPod, iPhone and more recently the iPad.

A BBC News report in to the unfortunate death of Steve Jobs.

Jobs was widely known for his attention to detail and placed huge emphasis on the design and usability of all Apple products. He helped introduce the first computer to be navigated by a mouse, transformed the music industry with the iPod and has now created the latest technological trend in tablet computers with the introduction of the iPad.

Just days before Steve Jobs’ tragic passing, Apple announced the release of their new iPhone 4S, which can boast an improved camera, significantly improved battery life and will run using the latest iOS5 operating system. The latest model will come in either black or white and in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, however it has drawn some criticism since it was revealed as many believe there are no significant differences from the iPhone 4.

Cyber-Duck will be designing and developing a brand new web presence for Essex Governor Services Ltd (EGS) who specialise in governing equipment and control systems for engines and turbines, including repair and test services, supply of spare parts, in addition to designing new electronic systems to provide companies with state of the art technology to minimise cost and maximise efficiency and reliability.

EGS are also an official partner of General Electric, one of the world’s biggest technological innovators in the energy, transportation, healthcare, media and financial services' industries. Cyber-Duck will be responsible for the build of their new website as well as creating a new brand identity, and provide technical/marketing support on a retainer basis.

A firm based in Texas has created an innovative new way to advertise for ‘free’ on Google. Phillips & Co have created a service called Blue Marble which is designed to help businesses, cities or schools raise their profile by installing QR Codes on the roofs of buildings. When the building is viewed from above in Google Maps, users will be able to scan the QR codes and be directed to an appropriate landing page.

The world’s cheapest tablet was launched this week. Named the Aakash, makers Datawind say the tablet device can be picked up for as little as £23, and will feature the Google Android operating system, Wi-Fi connectivity, cloud storage, 256 MB of RAM, a 32 GB expandable memory slot and two USB ports. There is also a higher specification £39 model which has an in-built cellular modem and SIM to access Internet.

Sticking with tablets, data loss Protection Company Symantec has announced plans to create a version of their software for tablet devices. The software will first be made available on the Apple iPad and will be able to securely control and monitor the transmission of private data between tablet devices.

Double congratulations are in order for new duck Paul O'Keefe who this week is graduating from Plymouth College of Art in Graphic Design as well as coming 2nd place in an international 'Designers Against Fur' animation competition!
